Understanding oxygen and it's affects on patients is crucial for surgery. 100% oxygen has a higher percentage of atelectasis (collapse of the lung), kidney failure, and myocardial injuries in patients than a lower oxygen rate, such as 80% oxygen. However lower concentrations of oxygen, such as 80% shortens the time margin before unacceptable desaturation levels. Higher levels of oxygen create increased unloading of CO2 and in turn decreases cerebral blood flow.
Getting away from compressed Oxygen, should be a goal for three reasons. 1) Safety of the patient. 2) Safety of the staff (compressed air is very dangerous if knocked over. 3) Cost to supply.
